The DVDs are Fujifilm DVD-R and I have been using them for a long time now with zero failures (bought a bulk lot for peanuts when DSE sold off their stock). The burner is an ASUS DVD/CD RW about 18 months old and little used. I can read data off DVDs OK and videos play etc. No data transfers, so the problem occurs prior to starting the burn phase. I have searched every which way, but it seems clear that the information is simply not accessible, and I am left wondering whether my RAID installation may have taken precedence over that information, but I somehow doubt that. To cut a long story short, rebooting and other exercises have failed to resurrect that data in Device Manager.

the IDE ATA/ATAPI list of Controllers was missing. It appears that this can happen if the burner has been switched from DMA to PIO so I headed off to Device Manager to have a look-see, however when I got there, the cupboard was bare, i.e. I did the necessary Google search and it is a known error message. I tried to burn a DVD this morning using ROXIO Easy CD & DVD Creator (V6) as usual, and got the error message E80070057 'The parameter is incorrect'.
